Alex recalls the first ritual she oversaw, which was for them. Darlington had taught her to ward off the Greys, but things had still gotten out of control when one of the Greys grabbed her arm, something Darlington hadn’t thought was possible. Darlington’s task is to train Alex to take his place, but he is unprepared for a street smart and vulgar girl of mixed heritage without even a GED. After a rocky start, however, Darlington and Alex learn to work together and, gradually, come to understand each other better. I find secret societies a little hokey and self-important, so a book that gives them even more import and significance was always going to illicit some skepticism from me. However, Bardugo’s novel was imaginative enough to help me move past it all.

Alex sees the video and realizes that Blake used Merity, a compulsion magic drug used by the societies. Alex goes to the fraternity house and uses compulsion magic to make Blake delete the video, and then humiliates him by recording a video of him eating feces.

Alex begins to investigate thesedates and compares them with Darlington’s notes. She realizes that each ofthese dates mark the death of a young girl and a creation of one of the eighthouses. She begins to suspect someone is trying to create another house.

After the ritual, news of a potential homicide sends Alex to a crime scene under the guidance of Pamela “Oculus” Dawes and Detective Abel Turner. The victim, Tara Hutchins, appears unrelated to any arcane activities, with initial suspicion falling on her boyfriend, Lance Gressang. Alex Stern’s traumatic backstory makes Ninth House very much an adult read, as does the violence and gore depicted. Her life experiences have left her world-weary beyond measure. As Alex delves deeper into this hidden world, the plot thickens, revealing layers of conspiracy and supernatural elements that challenge her understanding of reality.
Mike agrees to the ritual and also gives her a powder to make her temporarily very persuasive. With the powder (Starpower), Alex “persuades” Blake and his friends to delete the video. She also has Blake take a video embarrassing himself (he eats his own poop).

Belbalm reveals she can also see ghosts, and that she and Alex are Wheelwalkers, meaning they can enter both the physical and spiritual realms. Belbalm exposes that she is actually North’s murdered wife, Daisy, and that she consumed the soul and took the body of her housekeeper. Belbalm has been consuming the souls of young girls every few years to stay alive. Sandow’s ritual did not work because Belbalm did not consume Tara’s soul.
Soon, he brought Colin to them who wanted them to grow mushrooms. Colin also gave Tara a chalice to distill them into “tab”. Tab can portal a person short distances, but they need to be at the Scroll and Key tomb to go a long distance. Alex returns to her dorm room to find Mercy distraught.
